Storytelling Techniques

When one realises that the secret to a good story is to sHOW rather than tELL, the doors to creative writing and storytlling are kicked wide open.

As is the case with manga and comic artists through time, The strength of a story is determined whether your narrative is smooth and clear even without the use of words. And so the tradition of the silent manga/comic is born in the wake of the silent film at the beginning of filmmaking.

Using a series of techniques like comic mashups, silent comics and 4-panel yonkoma; we’ll approach telling the same story to achieve a different effect using different stratetgies; as well as experimenting with group stories.

With the mindframe of a film director, telling a story becomes less of a writing chore, and more of an exciting challenge.

Objectives:

  1. To understand what makes great stories great. A quick look at some famous comics, animations and film narratives that do that well.
  2. To learn the importance of both creating a cLEAr narrative without losing or confusing the reader; and how to make it fun and exCITIng enough that the reader CARES about the story and would want to know what happens next!
  3. To develop the skill of knowing when to speed up a moment, or slow it down to maximise the effect sought; with varying techniques and exercises to put all elements into practice.
  4. To Present the finished story/introduction to the story to an audience in order to become aware of the importance of separating your own immersion of a story with readers’ and viewers’ perception of it.
